Forced Induction Engines

Prior to the 1960’s you will be hard pressed to find vehicles that used forced induction engines; well a ground based vehicle at least.  Prior to the 1960’s some aircraft used forced induction engines, like the P-51D Mustang which used a Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 engine, which was a two-stage two-speed supercharged engine.  In fact there are two types of forced induction engines you’re probably familiar with, the turbocharged and supercharged engines.  Whether a supercharger or a turbocharged is used their function is to force air into the cylinders to enhance combustion.

The basics of Superchargers

Generally superchargers are used on larger engines and are not commonly found on production models while turbocharged forced induction engines have become quite popular in today’s automotive landscape.  The major reason for the increase in turbocharged forced induction engines is they offer a great balance of power and performance to fuel efficiency.  This makes turbocharged engines a great choice for automakers wanting to offer power without compromising fuel economy.

Basic Turbocharger system

This has indeed changed the automotive landscape with many turbocharged four cylinder engines found in everything from sedans to CUV’s.  Turbocharged forced induction engines do come with some drawbacks though.  First, you generally need to use high octane premium fuel which can cost a few dollars more per tank at the pump.  Second, the turbocharger produces more power as the engines RPM’s increase not initially, known as turbo-lag.

This drawback, the result of needing the engines exhaust gasses to drive the turbocharger, has been well understood for years and there are currently several auto makers working on electric turbochargers that eliminate the turbo lag using electrical power and an electric motor to spool the turbocharger instead of waiting until the engine RPM’s are great enough to benefit from exhaust driven turbochargers.  In testing these systems have proven quite effective in eliminating the turbo-lag and have also proven to offer even more gains in fuel efficiency.
