How to Store Your Vehicle

There still is plenty of summer left to enjoy, but as it winds down, and it comes time to pack up that classic car, convertible, or whatever you might have brought out during these warmer months, we want to give you a few quick and important tips on how to store your vehicle in areas like Manhattan, KS.

The very first thing you’ll want to consider is where you will be storing your vehicle. The location you choose should obviously be secure so no one tampers with it, but it should also be dark and dry since your vehicle will be unattended for quite some time.

Storing the vehicle somewhere like a garage, on concrete, you won’t have to worry much about moisture compared to if you are parking it on dirt. If that is the case, we would recommend you lay a tarp down first, and place under the tires.

Also clean out the interior, don’t leave any bottles or cans of liquids in the trunk or floor of the cabin, especially if you plan to store your vehicle over the winter months because they may explode if you’re in a cold enough climate. (Baking soda packages can be placed in the trunk or backseat to absorb any potential moisture.)

Once the exterior and interior are prepared, you’ll want to address a few of the mechanical and innerworkings:

Fill up your fuel tank on last time and add some fuel stabilizer; drive your car around a little bit to get the liquids moving around and all of the air out to prevent any chance of rusting. It’s also import to change your vehicle’s oil before letting it sit, and if you need any help with this or are looking for a discount on oil, take a look as the sales and services we provide.

Unhook the battery, disconnecting the negative first, then followed by the positive connector. You’ll want to store the battery separately so it doesn’t drain, so make sure to find it a dry place, and one that isn’t so cold that it could freeze.

Jack your vehicle up so it doesn’t have to support any weight and can rest easily until the next time you take it out for a drive. Double check that your windows are closed and the doors are locked before you pull the cover over it, and you should be all set until the next drive.
