How to Stop and Prevent Vehicles from Rusting

There is nothing attractive about a paint-bubbling rust spot that is slowing eating its way along a vehicle. We’ve all seen pictures of old abandoned vehicles (if not….well, then just look at the picture above) where there are just a few traces of the original paint color left. Antique and older vehicles aren’t the only ones that can become rust buckets, and this is why it’s so important to take care of the exterior of your vehicle. Whether your car is blemish-free or you’ve noticed a rusty spot starting to form, learn here at Briggs Super Center how to stop and prevent vehicles from rusting.

A common misconception is that  rust only develops on old or neglected vehicles, but the fact of the matter is, even a new model can be affected; although it is less likely. Something as simple as a scratch caused by a kicked up stone or a door ding from a careless vehicle in the parking spot next to you can lead to rust. The steel frame of a vehicle is solid and sturdy; after all, it’s designed to protect you and your passengers in the event of an accident, but once the layer of paint coating it has been chipped away, the exposure to the elements invites a rust invasion.

If you notice a chip in your paint, time is of the essence; for a temporary quick fix, paint on a little clear nail polish to seal out air, water, and dirt. (Fast fact: Salt is the number one rust culprit for drivers in cold climates. Car washes are an easy and important preventative measure to avoid the salt from eating through paint.) Next, as soon as possible, purchase some touch-up paint that matches your color. You can find the paint code number located somewhere within your vehicle, but do be warned it will vary by automaker. Reference your owner’s manual to find the exact location.

In the event that you vehicle is dented or dinged,  you’ll  also be able to visit a repair shop or dealership where paintless dent repair can be performed. At Briggs Super Center, our body shop uses expert techniques to repair minor dents and dings to keep your vehicle looking flawless.
