What most American side mirrors show, your own car

Used Car Sales

At Briggs Supercenter we get a lot of young buyers in looking for used car sales that make it easy and affordable to get into the vehicle they need.  As your used car sales specialists in Manhattan, we at Briggs Supercenter have years of experience helping buyer get into the vehicle they need at a price they can afford.  You could say it’s what we do at Briggs Supercenter.  We’re also drivers and in this blog we’d like to take some time to talk about your side mirrors.  More specifically, we’re going to share how to adjust them properly and eliminate the blind spots beside your vehicle.  According to the NHTSA there are nearly 840,000 side-to-side blind spot collisions resulting in 300 fatalities a year, so please take the time to consider this blog and make adjustments to your side mirrors.

To be clear this is not a failing of American drivers as much as it is a failure of communication and education.  The failure is that most American drivers have either never been taught how to properly adjust their mirrors, or that they have just forgotten how to.  Making things worse is that rather than simple communication to help drivers the industry uses the supposed “blind spots” as a reason to create and offer you more technology meant to protect you from the “blind spots” that exist as a result of your improperly adjusted mirrors.  In a vehicle with properly adjusted side mirrors the blind spots beside your vehicle can be completely eliminated.

Correct mirror setting

So how do you adjust the side mirrors to eliminate blind spots?  It’s easy and can be done alone in most vehicles.  Sit in your driver’s seat in same position you would normally drive.  Beginning with either mirror, adjust the level (up/down) of the side mirror.  Now adjust your side mirror angle (right/left) by moving the mirror away from you until you can no longer see any of your own vehicle in the mirror.  Do the same on the other side and your set.

Perfectly set side mirror

Your side mirrors are not for looking at the side of your vehicle and you’ll have to try extremely hard and even then will likely fail to get into a collision with your own car.  Adjust your mirrors properly so that you see other cars in them, not your own.  There will still be so-called blind spots from roof pillars, but the blind spots beside your car will be eliminated.  In fact, a properly adjusted side mirror will show a vehicle passing on either side until it enters your peripheral field of vision.

At Briggs Supercenter we want all our customers to be safe out there and having properly adjusted side mirrors make a difference.  We hope you’ve enjoyed our blog on adjusting side mirrors and we hope this knowledge makes a difference in the safety of you and your passengers on the road.  We invite you to shop our selection of used cars in Manhattan featuring a wide variety of makes and models from a range of years so there is sure to be a vehicle that meets your needs at Briggs Supercenter.  We’ll also help you with convenient online credit approval and payment calculators.  Please check out our other safety blogs and thank you for choosing Briggs Supercenter for used car sales in Manhattan.
