Rolling Coal Kansas

For some people, modifying a vehicle can be part of the fun of ownership. However, there are times when this can be taken too far. One such instance is the practice of “rolling coal.” But is “rolling coal” legal in Kansas? And what exactly is it?

What is “Rolling Coal?”

“Rolling Coal” is the practice of removing or disabling the clean burning program of a computer controlled diesel engine. This will cause the vehicle to emit larger, darker clouds of exhaust. “Rolling Coal” has become seen an anti-environmentalist protest against clean-air regulations.

Most “Coal Rolling” vehicles have been modified to be able to selectively emit these large clouds of exhaust. This allows specific vehicles or people to be “targeted.” Common targets are the owners of hybrid or electric vehicles or bicyclists.Image may be NSFW.

The practice of “Rolling Coal” has gained popularity due to videos of it gaining popularity on the internet. Significant backlash to the practice has resulted in several laws being passed restricting the legality of it. The Environmental Protection Agency has stated that “Coal Rolling” is a violation of the clean air act, and thus very much illegal.

Anyone caught “Coal Rolling” by the Kansas Highway Patrol will be ticketed and fined. Any mechanics that are caught making, or offering to make, the modifications necessary to enable vehicles to do this will also face repercussions from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Vehicle emissions restrictions are meant to help protect the environment. Even if one disagrees with that, fuel efficient vehicles help reduce the cost of ownership and save everyone money.
